So it goes…Ohio 97, Georgetown 83

Georgetown’s season ended Thursday night in the most embarrassing way imaginable, losing 97-83 to #14 seed Ohio in a game the Hoyas were never really in.  As the score indicates, the Georgetown’s defense, or lack thereof, was its undoing.  Ohio ran one high pick-and-roll after another, repeatedly capitalizing on the resulting mismatches and raining open 3s.  On the game, the Bobcats shot a scorching 58.2% from the field, and a still-more impressive 56.5% from three.  The Hoyas shot well, but turned the ball over far too often (18 on the game), and just could not seem to claw back into the game.

Ohio got up early, 8-2, again at 36-24, and yet again at 48-34.  The Bobcat guards Armon Bassett and D.J. Cooper were particularly lethal, both sniping from deep and picking apart the Hoya defense on drives.  Georgetown was plenty potent offensively, with Chris Wright in particular having his way with the Bobcat defense.  Wright finished with an impressive 28 points while Greg Monroe had 19 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists, but each had more turnovers than assists.  Monroe in particular seemed to rack up a charging call every time the Hoyas looked like they might break through.  Perhaps the most effective Hoya, on balance, was Hollis Thompson, who finished with 16 points and, just as importantly, zero turnovers.

The second half seemed like a funeral; the Hoyas made a belated “run”  around the six minute mark to get the game within seven, but then Jerrelle Benimon missed the front end of a 1-and-1, Ohio drained yet another 3, and the outcome was never again in doubt.

Perhaps the only good news from the night was Monroe’s indication that he’ll be back next year. “I’m ready to go back and see how I can help my team next year,” he said.

This loss was too shocking and depressing to allow for a season review, but one will come soon enough.
