the hangover…South Florida 72, Georgetown 64

Georgetown showed up early but faded like a hungover weekend warrior at Yates, losing 72-64 to South Florida Wednesday night.  The Bulls outscored the Hoyas 46-29 in the second half, led by Dominique Jones, who scored 22 of his 29 points after the break.  Apparently stuck somewhere between the exhilarating high of Saturday’s win over Duke and this Saturday’s win over Villanova, Georgetown was listless through much of the second half, missing free throw after free throw (11-22 overall) and turning the ball over with impunity.

In a 10-minute span, the Hoyas were outscored 21-5, turning an 8-point lead into an equally large 52-44 deficit.  The Hoyas twice cut the lead to two, but then Greg Monroe fouled out, and the Hoyas frittered away their remaining possessions on the aforementioned miss free throws and turnovers.

Monroe and Austin Freeman scored 21 points apiece, and Monroe grabbed 10 rebounds to boot.  The rest of the team tallied just 22, though, with Chris Wright (3-10 for 8 pts) and Jason Clark (2-6 for 7 pts) the principal bricklayers.

Hard to know what to say, except that at least the boys have three days to regroup for Villanova.
