Chris Wright scored 27 points to lead four Hoyas in double figures as #14 Georgetown beat the #11 Pitt Panthers 74-66 Wednesday night, ending Pitt’s 31-game home winning streak, the second-longest in the nation.
A few quick thoughts:
- Star: Wright. 27 points, 11 of 17 shooting, several clutch baskets, a three to give the Hoyas the lead for good, and a shot-clock-beating lay-up that iced the game.
- Supporting Cast: Greg Monroe (13 pts, 11 reb) and Austin Freeman (13 pts).
- The Hoyas won because: they didn’t give the ball away. Georgetown matched the Panthers on the boards (31 rebounds apiece) and committed just one more turnover (8-7). And, they got to the line for easy points (15-of-21 v. 10-of-17 for Pitt).
- Key sequence: Georgetown scored on four straight possessions to turn a 56-54 disadvantage to a 63-56 lead, capped by an Austin Freeman dunk, and followed, after a Pitt basket, by a three-point play by Julian Vaughn to put the Hoyas up 8.
- Ugliness is equal opportunity: Vaughn and Greg Monroe shot a combined 8-for-24. Ashton Gibbs and Brad Wanamaker, Pitt’s two leading scorers who put in over 30 per between them, shot a combined 7-for-28 for 17 points.
- Lingering question: bench production. Henry Sims and Vee Sanford are non-factors at this point, but Hollis Thompson (0 pts, 2 rebounds in 18 minutes) has been invisible recently. Jerrelle Benimon has been a bit better (3 points, 4 rebounds, 12 minutes), but is far from a one-man bench.
- First time for everything: First Hoya W over Pitt since 2007, first Pitt L at Petersen in 32 games; first Pitt L in the Big East this year.
