Georgetown 97, Lafayette 64

Jason Clark scored 19 points to lead six Hoyas in double figures as Georgetown beat Lafayette 97-64 Saturday in the Phone Booth.  The win was easily the Hoyas’ most impressive to date, and a particularly pleasant surprise came from Hollis Thompson, who made all six of his shots, including four from three-point range, to score 14 points.  Clark and Greg Monroe displayed their increasingly characteristic overall excellence: Clark supplemented his scoring with five rebounds, six assists, and three steals, while Monroe had a healthy 13 points, nine rebounds, six assists, plus a steal and a block to boot. You can catch highlights of the action here.

Georgetown never trailed, but also spent the first 10 minutes of the game struggling to separate themselves from the sharp-shooting Leopards.  When JTIII called for time with 10:22 remaining, the Hoyas led just 20-19, thanks to five three-pointers from four different Lafayette players.  JTIII’s words of wisdom lit a fire,  though, as the Hoyas closed out the half on a 25-12 run thanks to seven points from Monroe and six apiece from Clark, Chris Wright and Hollis.

The Hoyas added to their 45-31 halftime advantage by a 12-1 run to start the second half.  Lafayette never pulled closer than 19 the rest of the way, and the Hoyas inched their way to a blowout.  In addition to Clark, Monroe, and Hollis, Wright scored 14 with four assists, Austin Freeman scored 12, and Julian Vaughn scored 11 while nabbing five rebounds.

Georgetown shot very well for the day–61% from the field, 50% from three, 83% from the line–and shared the ball well, assisting on 24 of 36 made baskets. Only Wright (5-of-13) and Ryan Dougherty, who missed his only attempt, shot below 50% for the day. The Hoyas also remedied two early flaws, committing just 11 turnovers to Lafayette’s 14 and 14 fouls to Lafayette’s 20.

A quick turnaround for Georgetown, who suits up against Mount St. Mary’s Monday evening.
