Georgetown 63, Savannah St. 44

Georgetown overcame a slow start to mount a balanced attack en route to a relatively easy 63-44 victory over Savannah State on Saturday.  Jason Clark led the Hoyas with 14 points, while Greg Monroe, Austin Freeman, and Chris Wright all reached double figures as well.

The Hoyas came out of the gates slowly, going scoreless for the game’s first four minutes and falling behind 7-0.  Georgetown proceeded to score 21 of the game’s next 25 points, with Clark and Wright leading the way, and entered half time with a 34-20 advantage.

The Hoyas stretched that advantage to 21 at several points in the second half, thanks to Monroe’s hot hand, while also finding time for bench players Hollis Thompson (20 mins., 2 pts., 4 rebs., 3 assts., 3 blks.), Nikita Mescheriakov (13 mins., nothing much good), Henry Sims (11 mins., 4 pts., 2 rebs., 2 blks.), and Vee Sanford (11 mins., 2 pts., 2 rebs., 2 assts., 1 stl. 1 blk.).

Over all, it was a mixed bag.  The Hoyas shot well from the field, connecting on 52% of their field goal attempts and 7 of 13 from 3, and doling out 17 assists on 26 made baskets (65%).  Not so much from the line, where the Hoyas missed 8 of 12 shots.  The Hoyas played typically stingy defense, allowing the Tigers to shoot just 27% from the field.  Protecting the ball was, as ever, a problem, as the Hoyas turned the ball over 15 times, led ignominiously by Monroe’s 5.  And finding a fifth scorer continues to be a problem – aside from the four Hoyas in double figures, no one chipped in more than four points.

The Hoyas host Lafayette next Saturday in which should be their fourth straight victory to start the season.  No truth to the rumor that Julian Vaughn is bringing leftover turkey sandwiches for everyone.
